How this test measures your typing speed
Every typing test on the web, this one included, measures speed in words per minute using the same convention: five keystrokes count as one "word," regardless of how the actual words in the passage break down. A 60-second test where you typed 250 correct characters works out to 250 divided by 5, divided by one minute, which is 50 WPM. That five-character rule exists because real words vary wildly in length ("a" is one letter, "characteristic" is fourteen), so counting literal words would make short, easy passages score unrealistically high and long, technical passages score unfairly low.
This test reports four numbers, not just one, because WPM alone hides a lot:
- WPM (net): your speed counting only correctly typed characters, the number every other typing test reports as "your WPM." This is the one to compare against benchmarks.
- Raw WPM: your speed counting every keystroke, mistakes included. If raw WPM is much higher than net WPM, you are typing fast but sloppy, and slowing down slightly will likely raise your real score.
- CPM: characters per minute, the same correct-character count as net WPM but without dividing by five. Useful if you are comparing against an older test or a job posting that specifies a CPM requirement instead of WPM.
- Accuracy: the percentage of typed characters that were correct. Below about 95% accuracy, more practice on accuracy will raise your net WPM faster than practicing raw speed will.

How to use it
The test starts the instant you type your first character, not when the page loads, so you can read the opening words before committing.
- Choose a time limit above: 15 seconds for a quick check, 60 seconds for the most comparable score against published benchmarks, or 120 seconds if you want a longer sample.
- Click inside the input box under the passage. The passage text turns from gray to black as you correctly match each character, and red if you type the wrong letter.
- Just keep typing. There is no submit button and no need to stop for punctuation or capitalization mistakes, the diff updates live under your cursor.
- When the timer hits zero, your result appears automatically: WPM, raw WPM, CPM and accuracy, plus how many characters you typed correctly versus incorrectly.
- Click "New passage" any time to reset with a fresh, randomly generated block of text at the same time limit.
A worked example
Say you run the 60-second test and, by the time it ends, you have typed 312 characters total. Of those, 296 exactly matched the passage and 16 were mistakes (either a wrong letter or extra characters typed past where you should have stopped).

Notice the 3 WPM gap between raw and net speed. That gap is the direct cost of the 16 mistakes: every wrong character both fails to count toward your correct total and, on a real keyboard, usually costs you the split second it takes to notice and either correct it or keep going. Closing that gap, not typing harder, is usually the fastest way to raise a score once you are past the beginner stage.
Why accuracy usually matters more than raw speed
It is tempting to treat a typing test as a pure speed contest and just type as fast as physically possible. The math above shows why that backfires past a certain point: your net WPM, the number that actually gets compared to job requirements and leaderboards, is built entirely from correct characters. Every mistake is a keystroke that took time to make but contributes nothing to your score, and depending on how you correct it, may cost you a second keystroke too.
A useful rule of thumb: if your accuracy is under 95%, slow down slightly on your next attempt and watch your net WPM. Most typists find it goes up, not down, because the reduction in mistakes outweighs the small drop in raw typing speed. Once accuracy is consistently above 97 to 98%, that is when pushing raw speed starts paying off directly, because there is very little error-cost left to trade away.
Choosing a time limit
All four durations measure the same thing, WPM, CPM and accuracy, but they trade off differently between convenience and consistency.

Tips that actually raise your WPM
Speed gains that stick tend to come from a small set of habits, not from typing harder in the moment.
- Keep your eyes on the passage, not the keyboard. Every glance down costs a fraction of a second and, more importantly, breaks the rhythm that lets touch typing get fast in the first place.
- Use all ten fingers with a consistent home-row position (ASDF for the left hand, JKL; for the right). Two-finger "hunt and peck" typing has a hard ceiling well below 40 WPM for almost everyone.
- Do not chase a personal-best WPM on every single attempt. Practicing at roughly 90% of your maximum comfortable speed builds accuracy and muscle memory faster than always typing flat-out.
- If a specific letter or letter combination keeps causing mistakes, that is worth targeted practice on the practice page rather than repeating full-length tests.
- Check your posture and wrist position. A wrist bent upward or downward at the keyboard adds strain that shows up as more mistakes during longer sessions, not just discomfort.
Where the 5-character word standard comes from
The "5 characters = 1 word" rule did not start with online typing tests. It dates back to mechanical typewriter certification tests in the early 20th century, when typing speed was already being measured for office and clerical jobs. Early tests simply counted words in a passage and divided by minutes, but that punished typists assigned a passage full of long words and flattered typists assigned short, simple text. Standardizing on a fixed character count per "word," regardless of the actual words on the page, fixed that: two typists copying different passages at the same true keystroke rate now score the same WPM.
That standard carried over almost unchanged into digital typing tests, typing certification software used by schools and employers, and now web-based tools like this one. It is worth knowing the history mainly because it explains an otherwise confusing detail: your WPM score on a passage full of short words like "a," "to," and "is" will not be inflated compared to a passage full of longer words, because the scoring never actually counts words at all, only characters.
Does your keyboard affect your typing speed?
Keyboard choice matters less than most people expect, but it is not zero. A few factors genuinely move the needle:
- Key travel and feel: mechanical keyboards with tactile or clicky switches give clearer feedback on each keystroke, which can reduce double-presses and missed keys for some typists, though the effect size varies a lot person to person.
- Layout familiarity: switching from a full-size keyboard to a compact laptop layout, or vice versa, typically costs 5 to 15 WPM for the first few days until muscle memory adjusts, even for an experienced typist.
- Key layout standard: the near-universal QWERTY layout is what almost every typing test, including this one, assumes. Alternative layouts like Dvorak or Colemak can eventually reach higher ceiling speeds for some typists, but require weeks of retraining and are not necessary to reach a fast, professional-level WPM.
- Screen and desk ergonomics: a keyboard positioned too high, too low, or at an awkward angle causes fatigue-driven mistakes well before it causes raw slowness, which is why accuracy often drops in the last 20 seconds of a 120-second test.
If your WPM feels inconsistent across different devices, that is expected and not a sign anything is wrong with your typing. Testing on the same keyboard you use daily gives the most meaningful score to track over time.
Common typing test mistakes
A few patterns come up again and again in typing test results, and most are easy to fix once you know what to look for.
- Racing the first few words before finding a rhythm, then having accuracy fall further behind as the timer counts down and pressure builds.
- Correcting every single mistake mid-test. On this test, an already-passed character cannot be edited, so trying to backtrack usually costs more time than the one wrong character did.
- Testing only once and treating the result as a fixed number. WPM naturally varies by 5 to 10 points between attempts on the same day; three or four attempts averaged gives a far more reliable number.
- Ignoring accuracy entirely and only screenshotting the WPM number. A 70 WPM result at 85% accuracy is a slower real-world typist than a 55 WPM result at 98% accuracy, once you account for the time spent fixing mistakes afterward.
